Learn ALL about Chicago here. This museum provided a free audio tour done by Chicago residents with admission. What a treat! (Especially since it's free on Mondays) I also liked the create your own Chicago Postcard which was immediately emailed to me (Sensing Chicago)! In 2009 they are celebrating Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. The dioramas were a definite to see!... more

I have been going to the museum since I was a kid but this was the first visit since the renovation. $14 admission is $10 to much. One thing really bugged me. The museum has in its possession the surrender table from Appomattox and other items (besides the bed) from the room where Lincoln died. Neither grouping were on display.... more

This is not a huge museum, but it is very well-organized and full of info. The temporary exhibits we saw were outstanding. They had one on the history of fashion in Chicago including dresses from the 20s by Chanel. They also had an exhibit on the artifacts of Lincoln. The permanent exhibits are also very good and the museum contains... more

We visited this museum on a Saturday afternoon during the summer. Unlike the Field Museum or Shedd, this museum is not overrun with visitors and screaming kids, which is kind of nice. The museum has a lot of space but the space is a little bit underutilized. There is hardly anything to see at all on the first floor and... more

Between the permanent and temporary exhibitions there is something to interest everyone here, whether you think you know Chicago history or don't know much about it. There is a good deal of black history mixed in. They cover everything from sports to industry to clothing - the good (exhibitions, architecture, labor, etc.) to the non-glamorous (riots, public housing, etc.). There... more

The museum is a very rich photography collection and a tram… For people interesting in pictures and who don’t know to search online … But, I thought History museums suppose to have artifacts?! Anyway is very important to visit: there are people employed there that count on your money ! The worst I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen several in... more

I just visited the "new" museum today at the Member's Preview. What a great improvement over the old stuffy CHS. It's still on two floors. The rear of the building still has the old design. But the font of the museum where most of the exhibits are located is a totally redesigned space. They're still working out some kinks. A... more

The staff here REALLY loves the place. Give them an opportunity to show you their favorite exhibits in the museum. One docent showed us with pride the actual bed that Abraham Lincoln died in. There was an interesting and informative slide presentation about the Great Fire of 1871. Go on Mondays, when admission is free. more
