We are big fans of Rick's TV show and I've made several of his recipes which we always like. "Fancy" Mexican food is an interesting concept and Topolo is a very specific genre of restaurant. I would recommend trying it for lunch to see if you like it as it is very expensive...$200 for dinner for two with one drink... more

For a restaurant that has high aspirations, some of its creations fall flat. The menu is varied and authentic, but the dishes are a bit overly complicated, resulting in too much play between sweet and savory. The service, on the other hand, is exceptionally good and the staff are welcoming, pleasant, and very accomodating. The dining room is a bit... more

the frontera grill gets crowded, we went about 20 minutes before opening and by the time the doors opened people were lined up down the street. From the time the waiter shook the margarita at the table until the last cup of coffee, everything was amazingly fresh and well prepared. would definitely recommend if you have one special dinner out... more

We had dinner last week at Topolobampo. Pretty pricey place especially the wine list. If you go, try to reserve a table against the wall. We were located in the middle row of tables. The wait staff used the aisle next to our table to do all the serving which makes for a lot of traffic. My husband's back was... more

Everyone kept questioning me when I told them I would be going to a 4 star Mexican restaurant in Chicago. None of my friend would believe me that there does exist such a place. Frankly and that is the problem with judging just how good this place is. Where else can you compare this cuisine to? The closest thing really... more

FIRST IMPRESSION:This restaurant appears to be your typical Mexican Restaurant. Tile floors, bright colors, cheap seats, not especially clean but fine environment. We had made reservations a few months in advance, arrived on time and waited 40 minutes for our table by the kitchen door. SERVICE:The waitstaff was silly, we had a Matra D' that was nervous and so quiet... more

This place is very disappointing. First of all service is spotty if not horrible. We had appetizers and full meal. We are from Rick's hometown and regular viewers of his show. I will chalk it up to Chicagoans (no offense) not having a palate for great Mexican fare. C'mon. They serve salsa in two tablespoon portions????? Are you kidding me?... more

Rick Bayless is one of my favorite chefs, and his restaurant does not fail to amaze me. I have not been to Topolobampo but have been to Frontera Grill a few times. Make sure to make a reservation, or you WILL be waiting. However, if you are stuck waiting, there is a nice bar area and you can order drinks... more
