WE (my 2 sisters and I) are taking my mother for a surprise weekend to chicago, on the south shore from south bend IN into downtown. WE have 2 nights stay at the swiss hotel, compliments of my father. Arrive friday night after christmas, and will be going to a show that night. meet me in st louis.

saturday is up in the air.

WE were thinking about a spa visit mom has never had a massage before and we want to pamper her. Does anyone know of a good spa close to the swiss or we could take a cab of course.

This is so exciting.

thank you

Not sure about spas downtown, but I've done a lot of teas.

Tea at the peninsula is nice, we took my parents there last year. Big airy room, they had a string quartet. The food was good.

I personally prefer the Atwood special holiday tea, which I believe will still be offered on the 26th and 27th. The two times I've gone, the food has been more interesting than the usual tea fear. The atmosphere is also a little warmer than Peninsula...but still very elegant and girly. See if you can reserve for a table by a window, they have big picture windows that look out on State Street.

I have also enjoyed tea at the Russian Tea Room, tho it wasn't particularly a standout.

I'd advise a reservation, as these places fill up during the holidays.

well I will have to ask my sisters what they think.

peninsula, have it in the lobby, wonder if they have live music?

Atwood, special holiday tea, dining room strings quartet...

the walnut room at marshall fields on state street which I hear can be very long wait time and no reservations.....which sounds great, they give you a beeper so you can shop while you wait, maybe making reservations would be better. Live music?

also....My mother doesn't like tea! she is a coffee drinker does this ruin the idea????

thanks bizi

The Drake Hotel has a nice tea, too, and is beautifully decorated for the holidays. I believe alternate beverages to tea are always available at any of these high teas.

metromix.com just posted a new holiday section -- it's worth checking out.
