On the Tripadvisor Forum, a lot of posters recommend, “getting out into the neighborhoods” of Chicago. I could never figure this out. What neighborhoods? I live in the suburbs - How would a tourist ever know what neighborhoods to visit outside the loop, museums and major attractions?
The Chicago Food Planet Tour is an excellent way to see the real Chicago. My sister and I took the Bucktown/Wicker Park tour and loved it. I had never been to this part of town before, but I’d love to go back. For a very reasonable $44, you get a tour of an interesting neighborhood, architectural and historical highlights, and enough tasty food to fill you for the rest of the day. Our tour began at 12:30 and lasted until 3:45. We stopped at a hot dog stand, a classy restaurant that served the best chocolate drink I’ve ever tasted, a deli that served pasta salad, a pizza place where we were served pizza and beer, a middle eastern restaurant where we had falafel sandwiches, and an ice cream parlor where we sampled a white chocolate/cream soda/nutella concoction that was excellent. We had a great group of people on our tour that made the experience a lot of fun.
We did the tour on a beautiful spring day, but dress for the weather since you will be outside for most of the time. Wear comfortable shoes since there is quite a bit of walking.

I recently went on the Near North Chicago Food Planet Food Tour, and I can honestly not think of a better way to spend my afternoon. The tour guide was amazing, providing amazing insight on everything from Chicago architecture to local cultural tid-bits.

The food was just as good. We started at Ashkenaz Deli, where we got to make our own Reuben Sandwiches! From there, we ambled our way through the beautiful gold coast, to old town, and then to Lincoln Park, where the tour culminated with some authentic and delicious stuffed Pizza from Bacinos's.

I definitely plan on taking the Wicker Park/Bucktown tour! I am from Chicago, and there were alot of things that I discovered about my neighborhood on the tour! Definitely recommend Chicago Food Planet Food Tours for tourists, and locals alike.

We had a great time with the "Near North" tour. Tripadvisor reviewers recommended eating breakfast first, and we were glad we did. Not starving made the tour much more enjoyable. The employees at the locations were nice, our tour guide did a great job, and it was so much fun learning about different foods and drinks. My favorite stops were Old Town Oil (the balsamic vinegars were super yummy) and The Fudge Pot (the butter toffee was amazing). My husband really liked Bacino's (fabulous stuffed pizza). It was great how we got to explore a part of the city and try new foods at the same time.

We had a fantastic time on this tour. We at a pretty good size breakfast about an hour before going on the tour and were still stuffed for hours after the end of it, no lunch needed. The samples were all delicious. We had mini reubens (I was given a potato pancake as I am a vegetarian, they were very accommodating), a big iced tea, some of the best toffee ever, and a huge piece of stuffed pizza, among other tastings. Plus, I never though I could enjoy myself so much in a shop that sells nothing but olive oil and vinegars. I really enjoyed discovering new shops and restaurants. We have been to Chicago three or four times in the last few years and have never even heard of the "Old Town" area that a good deal of the tour was centered in. It was exciting to explore and learn new facts about the city and its history. It was a little on the pricey side, but hey, we were on vacation and I think it was ultimately worth it. We are planning on checking out the Bucktown/Wicker Park tour on our next trip. I would highly recommend this tour!

The amount of food wasn't huge--but ended with a big slice of deep dish pizza, that satiated both my husband and I just fine. Told to eat BEFORE you come, it is best to look at this as a taste of Chicago--not a buffet to fill your face. The information for a new Chicagoan like me--great--who'd a guessed there was an olive oil AND spice shop near my Chiropractor! The information very good--though not as in depth as The Chicago Architecture Tours--but that was okay too. Definitely worth a walk, if you want a slice of something different.
