Stayed overnight on a concert going trip. I was quite pleasantly surprised by the renovation. Nice room that wasn't a standard cookie cutter square box.

Holiday Inn express, also know as Hotel Cass, underwent a 15 billion dollar refurb thank goodness.

I book for 4 nights, got a ridiculously low rate of $40 a night all inclusive as i booked a hotel/flight package with lastminute.com. I was sceptical thinking i would be put in a room reserved for priceline/orbitz bookers but i had a normal hotel room.i even got some extras as im a priority reward club holder.

Hotel staff were all nice except one who needed cheering up, doormen helpful ordering cabs and giving out umbrellers when it rained. breakfast was good choice, not many hotels in chaicago offer complimentary brekkie. Location was great, a mile from the lake shore and navy pier but its a nice safe walk. Loads of bars around, hard rock is a 5 minute walk, excalibur nightclub even closer. John hancock tower is a 15 min walk, the mag mile is 2-3 mins away allthough i was dissapointed with the mag mile. Its nothing on 5th avenue in NYC

Rooms are small but modern, LCD tv on the wall with 5-6 HD channels and a good range of other channels. Bathroom is modern, no probs whatsoever, choice of soft-hard pillows is a nice touch. Free wifi was useful

I would recommend this hotel for the price its great, i cant see a reason to go sheraton or hilton next time im in town. All it lacks is a bar but there are plenty close by.

If im really critical id say the cleanleness isnt too great when you walk around the hotel lobby and hallways, in my room where the skirting boards meet the carpet it was full of dust and the coloured carpet really showed it up.

My review is consistent with others. This is very European style of hotel. Located in a older building, small lobby with rooms that are very clean, neat but small. This is not a Hilton or Sheraton but you are not $300/night either. We stayed over the Valentine Weekend for less than $100/night including breakfast. Breakfast is average but more than adequate. The staff is very friendly. And security is good. Your room card is required to operate the elevator and the front door late at night. Two blocks west of Michigan Ave and four blocks south of Water Tower, handy Trader Vic around the corner, two blocks to the Red Line. Could not be more convenient.

First let me start off by touching on the topic of the hotel itself. Some of the pictures on this website depict the hotel before it was renovated and converted to a Holiday Inn Express. It is much nicer now. Secondly, on the topic of the rooms. Sure, they are small, but one must consider that this is a historic hotel from the 1920s. Not your average roadside, "Cookie-Cutter" Holiday Inn Express with giant "suites". The rooms are modern, and serve their purpose.

Upon check-in, the process was fast and efficient, and the staff was courteous, and up to standard, and the clerk was even willing to switch our room type to a different bed.

When I arrived in my room, it was clean on the surface, however there were some issues that could have been prevented by housekeeping, such as a hair in the bed, and a burned out light bulb in the lamp (maintenance did replace). Additionally, there was a big black spot in the shower.

The breakfast was delicious, however the staff couldn't have been any less friendly. Neither of the three breakfast hostesses were greeting or talking guests. They would bring food out and then go back in the kitchen and talk and eat. (door was propped open).

Overall good hotel, clean, safe, comfortable, but not amazing.
Would recommend however.
