Jun 23, 2009 | Trip type: Family

My decision to book our rooms at the Amalfi Chicago for our extended stay for almost a week with our family was without a doubt the best stay in our years of travel. We had a late arrival and had a long flight. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with smiles from the staff , extremely courteous and eager to help. Our check in was fast and smooth. There is a sense of luxury, calmness and comfort when you walk in.

The breakfast on our floor was a delight. The coffee was just steps from our room...to me that was a very big plus. The free cocktails and appetizers in their lounge are fabulous. The staff behind the bar were friendly and of course they have a glass jar for tips which we thought was appropriate.
Excellent way to relax, enjoy a drink, a snack and go back touring, shopping , a show or late dinner.
Hotel is walking distance to many restaurants., Blocks from shopping and touring sights.
Very pleasant rooms and quite comfortable. After a long day of touring, their pillows are simply the best.
Karine their Experience Designer is absolutely amazing ! She was a "great" help with getting tickets, directions, making suggestions, and transportation information to destinations and making our stay definitely a memorable one. All of Amalfi’s staff was very helpful and make you feel so welcomed.
Little did I know this hotel would make my first trip to Chicago a beautiful experience. I have stayed in many 4 and 5 star hotels, I must say this hotel has outstanding service !outstanding staff ! outstanding location ! Has beautiful decor.

The lobby is small and does not have the high floors you’d expect ... I must say , staying here was the best choice in hotels I have made in all my years of traveling. I will definitely come back and will recommend this hotel to my family and friends for business and leisure.

Found this hotel on expedia and then read reviews on tripadvisor berore booking.. Wonderful service; easy check in. Valet parking only which was a little pricy. The lobby is beautifully done and so was the room. Great toiletries by Aveda. Continental breakfast provided on each floor in the elevator lobby. Nightly cocktail hour with drink tickets provided at checkin. No complaints whatsoever. Would definitely stay again.

Great Rooms and Gym; Staff and service questionable

Staying at the Amalfi is the tale of two halves. The hotel as a facility is very nice with quiet rooms, comfortable beds and a nice gym.

However, the breakfast was mediocre at best (stale coffee and bread) and traveling up a floor for a toaster is senseless (they had to buy a lot of equipment so why not a toaster for each floor). It appears that the staff cut backs (assumed) have started to take its toll on the hotel's overall quality.

The final straw was when I called to ask for a late check-out and was told that the cleaning staff had said that no more late check-outs were allowed for today.

Enjoy the room but don't bank on the little extras (like you read elsewhere for this review) until the economy picks up.

We stayed at the Amalfi Hotel on the weekend of June 13th. With lots of events in Chicago that weekend, many of the places we tried to book first were full. We found a decent rate at the Amalfi, which included parking, complimentary cocktails, and a light breakfast (total cost was $299 including tax).

We really liked the room. It was clean and beautifully decorated with some nice extra touches (such as good magazines), the bed and pillows were very comfortable, and the bathroom had Aveda products and a fantastic double shower-head. The in-room heating and cooling system was quiet and worked well. The lobby was upscale, and the check-in and check-out were streamlined and very fast. All staff were friendly and courteous.

We did take advantage of the complimentary cocktail hour in the lounge - we got there about 15 minutes prior to the end, and there was a long line for the bar, but it moved fairly quickly and we were able to get our drinks and relax in a quiet corner. They serve some light appetizers along with top-shelf liquor.

Breakfast was basic (coffee, juices, fruit, yogurt, bagels and muffins) but adequate. It is served on each floor, which is really convenient.

We also liked the location of the hotel - it is very central and close to lots of downtown destinations. Obviously, on a summer weekend, many of our fellow guests were there to enjoy the downtown area, so there was a little noise from party-goers and some street noise, but nothing significant.

Overall, the price was not a bargain, but we felt we definitely got what we paid for and we would make this one of our first choices for a return trip.

My husband and I went to Chicago this past weekend for our anniversary. Honestly the Almafi Hotel dropped into our laps, as we didn't have a clue where to stay. But upon looking at other great reviews and for the price, we went for it. And it was wonderful - we had a corner, king size suite. We were blown away as soon as we opened the door - fairly large suite with two rooms (sofa and large HD TV in one and fairly large bedroom with king bed, HD TV in the other), with windows in each room that extended all throughout, looking out onto the streets of Chicago. Very fun and trendy, CLEAN, double-headed shower, lots of fun amenities like CD's, books, magazines, and Aveda spa products in the bathroom with vanity mirror and stool. Beautiful and tasty breakfast in the morning on each floor and free drinks at night in the bar that were excellent. And the staff was incredibly friendly (always saying hello with a smile) and very eager to help in any way, from planning events to storing your luggage on check out day if your flight or train doesn't leave until later. The hotel is a 20 minute walk from Union Station or 5 minutes by bus (124). Can't beat this hotel, honestly!!
