We ate at the Toplolobampo for a special occasion and weren't disappointed. It was a paradise for foodies.
I think that the Frontera Grill and Topolobampo should be separated in TripAdvisor because they are very different experiences. The Frontera is busy, crowded, and rather uncomfortable. I only had a margarita there (not very good), but don't think I could have enjoyed the food there even if it had been good. (We were there on Sat night and it was a mad-house.)
However, our experience at Topolobampo was very different. We had reservations (you need to make them 2-4 weeks in advance), but were there a bit early. The front desk staff was very nice and seated us quickly even though we were early. The ambiance is lovely and quiet with nice artwork on the walls. We had great oysters for an appetizer- very fresh and delicious. Then we had the chef's tasting menu. It included empanadas that were better than any I had ever had. The highlights of the tasting menu were lobster tails with squash and chili sauce AND another course of pork loin with kind of a maple sauce. We also got a dessert sampler with many small sized fantastic options (chocolate cake, blackberry merlot ice cream,...) All of the courses were paired with delicious wines.
The menus and the chef's tasting menus change all the time and you can find them on the website. The prices aren't cheap (expect to spend $100-150 each), but it is worth it for a splurge.
The service was very good. We always got each course at just the right time (not rushed or delayed). The food was always hot and served just right. The only complaint I have is that the servers spoke very softly when describing the dishes, so we couldn't always hear them.
We will definitely eat at Topolobampo again.
