My wife and I recently visited Chicago for the first time in late April, 2009 and took the 1 1/2 hour joint river/lake tour with Wendella. Note that the architectural society (whatever they are called) tours did not start until May so we could take that tour even if we wanted to. I'll also caveat the review by saying we had a 2 for 1 coupon from the Chicago Guide to Special Values site (http://www.chicagoofficeoftourism.org/specialValues/attractions/index.html), which one can use from Monday to Thursday. Our coupon expired at the end of April so I don't know if the site will be updated with another coupon for those coming later in the season.
Anyway, the tour was fantastic. It helped that the weather was very good. Mostly sunny with some wind. But even with the wind we could hear the guide clearly outdoors on the top deck. The guide was great. Don't remember her name but she gave a great tour. I know some reviews say the 'real' architectural tours are better and maybe from a strictly architectural nature they are, and I suppose it is nice to support a not-for-profit. But for basic tourists who want a bit of everything the tour was more than could be expected. The guide had a great knowledge of the history of the buildings, the city, architecture (I overheard her saying she had a masters degree in history or something). For the average tourist who wants a different view of the city with great views for photos, it was perfect. Because we were there in April, the boat wasn't full, so that was nice. I suppose if every seat was filled at a busier time of year it would have been harder to move around to take photos.
The lake portion was fun too, although it could have gone further south and north from the river, but for the 1 1/2 hours we had it was fine. We only had 2 1/2 days in the city so this was a perfect way to see a lot of Chicago in a short period of time. We would definately recommend this for anybody coming to Chicago for the 1st time, or since the skyline seems to be changing so much (new Trump Tower, and maybe the Spire eventually?), it would be fun to do more than once over the years. Again, we would recommend this tour to anybody. Even without the coupon, it is a good value at $23/person.
