“Great little B&B but shame about lack of room cleaning”

We booked House 5863 based on the other reviews.

It is a lovely B&B and been decorated to a very high standard - minimalist but chic. We stayed in room 1 which was a decent size with an on-suite shower room. There is a communal kitchen with microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster/grill, coffee machine etc. and you can help yourself all day to drinks (tea, coffee, sodas), cereals, croissants, muffins and bread. This is a great idea as it means you don't have to get up for breakfast at a specific time. There is also a nice sitting room area with table and chairs, sofa, armchairs, TV/DVD and computer with internet access.

The B&B is based in Andersonville which we loved and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to go to locally. In particular we would recommend M Henrys (breakfast), Tom Boy and Antiprima (all on Clark) and a lovely French restaurant (La Tache) on the corner of Clark/Balmoral.

It takes about 45 minutes to get Downtown, either going by bus (22 from Clark) or the EL.

For us, what let the B&B down was the room cleaning (or lack of it). When we arrived we had a card on our bed stating that it should be put in the key box if you wanted the bin and towells changing - we thought that this was a bit odd as everywhere we've stayed rooms are cleaned daily as a matter of course - and it did state in the book that rooms would be cleaned on a daily basis). We did this the first night and all that was done the next day was the bins and towells - no making of the bed/general clean or tidy up. We left the card again the next day but this time nothing happened. By day 4 (we stayed 6 nights), when our bin was overflowing and our sheets had not been changed (we have found it the norm for longer stays that sheets are changed after 3 nights) we emailed the manager (as we had not seen anyone for 4 days although there are 3 owners - we knew that the manager was ill and as a result unable to visit the B&B) and expressed our displeasure. We did get new towels that evening but again the next day our bin still wasn't emptied and sheets changed etc. After another email we finally got our sheets changed on day 6 and the bin emptied!

We really felt that the lack of cleaning really let down what was otherwise a lovely B&B.

The B&B provides a pick up service to/from the airport - although I don't think this is mentioned on their website and wasn't offered to us when we booked - we only found out when we booked a car to take us to the airport that they did pick ups ($45)

Staying at House 5863 is a very pleasant experience. Although there is no resident host, the manager is instantly available by cell phone and extremely helpful. When I decided to extend my stay for two days, he was very gracious about moving me into a larger room - since the one I was occupying had been booked - and discounting the rate. Both rooms were very comfortable, and I loved the clean modern style. Another real plus is the computer with Internet access and printer that is available in the common room, since I don't carry a laptop at all times.
The breakfast is pretty basic - no hot dishes, but plenty of coffee, juice, cereal, milk, and doughnuts or coffeecake - but the coffee is excellent and will get you awake enough to walk four blocks to M.Henry, which has possibly the best breakfast in Chicago (e.g., brioche French toast with mascarpone and fresh local berries) and a great lunch menu as well. Also, guests have free run of the kitchen, which is nice if you bring back leftovers from a great dinner and need a refridgerator.
The only downside is that there's no really good place to sit and read either in a bedroom or in the common room - the lighting looks wonderful but doesn't quite work for reading.

We stayed at House 5863 for 3 nights in mid-July. B & Bs aren't usually on the preferred accommdations list (too frilly/old-fashioned, too much socialising with other guests), however, a busy weekend in Chicago and high hotel prices forced us to look at other options than the usual boutique hotels. House 5863 was an absolute find!! It is beautiful, exceptionally clean, very modern and well-cared for by the owner, George Brown. Guests are very independent and can help themselves to a fully stocked fridge and pantry at all times (in addition to the fresh continental breakfast items available
each morning). The rooms are gorgeous - modern, warmly furnished with
wonderfully comfortable beds/high quality lines and flatscreen tvs. The bathrooms are equally modern with AVEDA toiletries and fluffy towels. There's a deck and garden perfect for eating breakfast outside. Our stay at House 5863 was the highlight of our weekend in Chicago!
