We went on this tour on a perfect Sunday in the summer and had a great time. Even though neither of us are architecture experts, we both learned a lot from the narrator of the tour about Chicago in general and the wonderful buildings that line the river. The narrators of the tour are all volunteers and love Chicago and its architecture. They want to be there instead of just doing it as a summer job.
Tickets can be bought in advance on line but you may want to wait and buy your ticket to make sure the weather is good. We walked right up and did not have any problems securing tickets for the next scheduled tour.
Tickets are a little bit pricey ($32/pp) but this a 1.5 hour tour and the best way to see a lot of Chicago skyscrapers in a short amount of time and a lot easier on the legs. Being on the river gives you a great vantage point for taking pictures and being able to really get a good idea of the scope of some of these buildings.
Our tour was sold out but there are no assigned seats. Seating is outside and not enclosed. There is an enclosed part of the boat that is mainly used as a refreshment area and bathrooms. There are some bad seats on the boat if you do not line up early enough. Instead of a getting a chair seat that line the rails, latecomers will be stuck with a bench seat in the middle of the boat. My advice is to line up 30 minutes before your boat is scheduled to leave and you should have no problem getting a choice seat.
Also, if you have a sunny day, make sure you put on suntan lotion. We got a little bit burned being outside for an hour and a half.
