I wanted to visit my old home-town, and show my wife around Chicago for the first time, so I wanted to be in the heart of things, but also have a quiet, romantic and elegant place. That's a tall order, but The Flemish House fit the bill.

Keep in mind that TFH is a privately run 6-flat (or 4? can't remember) graystone, so there is no room service or extensive staff, but Mike, the proprietor, is very professional, and took care of all the essentials with ease. If you're looking for the staff-based amenities you should go elsewhere, but then, that's not why you'd be looking at TFH in the first place. The rooms are roomier than anything else you'll find for the price in the Gold Coast area, and they have a lovely, cozy, traditional style, with 19th century woodwork and accents. Our room had an efficiency set up and continental breakfast fixings were left for us each morning, which were just right for us. We appreciated having the refrigerator and stove for quick snacks as well.

Along with the style, the hallmark of TFH is its location. A half block from Lake Shore Drive, 2 blocks from the entrance to Oak Street Beach, 2 blocks from Rush street and 3 from the Magnificent Mile and all the restaurants, shops and amenities that come with those landmarks (including the coffee at Dunkin' Donuts which my lovely bride cannot do w/o). All on a lovely, tony, tree-lined residential street.

We spend a week in Chicago and had the best time, feeling we were returning home every evening. The location couldn't be better, we walked to all the main sights and shopping areas, taking the nearby metro only when tired and/or returning. Many restaurants and bars nearby. On top of it all, the owners hospitality made it a place we would always want to return.

What a fabulous place to stay! Over the years I have stayed in many of the hotels in the Michigan Avenue / Gold Coast area, and none of them can match the Flemish House for it's great location and complete comfort. Tucked away on a leafy Gold Coast residential street, the Flemish House is very close to shops and restaurants, yet far enough away from the commercial areas to be surprisingly quiet and peaceful. The accomodations are superb - we had a very spacious room with two double beds and a separate seating area for the television, along with a small kitchen and a breakfast area. We also had loads of closet space and a big bathroom. The owners are there onsite and available for questions or any extra help, but otherwise it feels very private and we almost never saw the other quests. Basically, staying at the Flemish House is like having your own condo in Chicago. We will be back for sure!

Flemish House B&B was chosen from the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed.
This B&B is a series of separate apartments, located 500 metres from Lake Michigan and within walking distance of the Chicago CBD. The owner lives on the top floor.
Our large apartment was fully self contained and absolutely everything one needed. The very large living room had tall ceilings was tastefully decorated including numerous prints on the walls. It had two double beds, small dining chairs & table as well as two lounge chairs for watching TV. It had a separate kitchenette with stove and all necessary crockery, cultlery & cooking utensils. There was a separate walk-in closet for storage & hanging clothes. The bathroom was large with good quality towels & toiletries.
Our apartment was on the 2nd floor [3rd floor in the US]. There is no lift and it meant carrying cases up the long flights of stairs.
The B&B has laundry & drying facilities in the basement. [Cost $1.50 each per load.]
Free wireless internet facilities are available in each room.
Outstanding accommodation close to the CBD. A hidden gem.

We stay at Flemish House for 4 nights. The situation is perfect: just off the main street. It is a very quiet and charming street. The room we stayed, 1R, was spacy and the decoration is beautiful. The kitchen was well equiped. Mike and Tom give us a nice welcome check-in. I will recommend the place without any hesitation.
