I wanted to visit my old home-town, and show my wife around Chicago for the first time, so I wanted to be in the heart of things, but also have a quiet, romantic and elegant place. That's a tall order, but The Flemish House fit the bill.
Keep in mind that TFH is a privately run 6-flat (or 4? can't remember) graystone, so there is no room service or extensive staff, but Mike, the proprietor, is very professional, and took care of all the essentials with ease. If you're looking for the staff-based amenities you should go elsewhere, but then, that's not why you'd be looking at TFH in the first place. The rooms are roomier than anything else you'll find for the price in the Gold Coast area, and they have a lovely, cozy, traditional style, with 19th century woodwork and accents. Our room had an efficiency set up and continental breakfast fixings were left for us each morning, which were just right for us. We appreciated having the refrigerator and stove for quick snacks as well.
Along with the style, the hallmark of TFH is its location. A half block from Lake Shore Drive, 2 blocks from the entrance to Oak Street Beach, 2 blocks from Rush street and 3 from the Magnificent Mile and all the restaurants, shops and amenities that come with those landmarks (including the coffee at Dunkin' Donuts which my lovely bride cannot do w/o). All on a lovely, tony, tree-lined residential street.
