“Beware! Bizarre and unpleasant experience.”

Old Town Bed and Breakfast

Jul 5, 2007

We booked our stay directly. The house is as appears on website. Lots of stairs to climb, 4 levels.

We had a very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience when a simple request was made (needed 2 sets of sheets for the available roll away beds). Owners interogated us and were verbally insulting in the company of our small children. I have never had an experience like this and am well travelled. Not the type of treatment/service you would expect at $850 per night. Did not feel safe there and would have checked out but owner refused refund after first night ,and we pre paid over $3200.

As an aside, 3rd floor bedrooms do smell horribly of cigarette smoke (these rooms back up to the owners' area). The breakfast is self serve cereal (the boxes were already opened and so were the condiments). House does back up to the train line.

Bottom line- a bizarre and uncomfortable experience. Complete lack of service etiquette. Unprofessional! You are safer elsewhere.

This was a four night whole house rental (exclusive use of the 3,250 square foot four bedroom, four bathroom guest house). The visit took place over the July 4th weekend. The group was to consist of two married couples, one in their sixties and the other with six children ages 5, 8, 8, 10, 13 and 15. Based on the guests' stipulation as to the size and composition of their party (which we made clear to the guests is one factor that we use in setting rates), we quoted and charged $750 a night (paid by the senior member of the party), not $850 as stated by the reviewer.

First, the men arrived with the six children who were all physically average to small in size for their ages. We had dressed the four queen beds and three of the twin beds. During the tour, we specifically asked the men to sign off on the sleeping arrangements or advise us of any change needed while the household help was still on hand to rearrange furniture and set up or tear down extra beds. The men gave their approval. Each of the two couples was to share a queen bed, two children would occupy each of the other two queen beds and two children would occupy twin beds. That left one extra twin bed.

When the women arrived, one of the men phoned to request personal items for the women and several extra sets of twin bedding. We were surprised and asked why. We went to the guest house to speak with the guests face to face. The women were in the first floor laundry room washing dirty clothes that they had brought with them. The children were jumping about on the Levenger furniture and Life Fitness workout machines. The women said that they wanted to use all available beds (and presumably couches) and "get their money's worth."

When my husband asked to speak with the older man in private away from the commotion in and around the laundry / workout room, the women strenuously objected. With that, we acceded to the guests' request. We soon learned that relatives of the group that booked were visiting Chicago at the same time. We observed their frequent comings and goings. The relatives appear to have stayed here as additional nonpaying guests. While our labor and costs for whole house rentals can increase dramatically with numbers of guests over 8 or for parties with a number of children, depending in no small part on guests' housekeeping habits, we likely would have allowed a few extra people without extra charge had the guests leveled with us.

As advertised, our food offering is self serve 24 hours a day and is extensive and plentiful. At all times, four or five 16 ounce boxes of name brand cereal are set out for guests. While a box or two might be opened at any given time, at all times, two or three of the boxes are sealed from the manufacturer. Our advertised food offering does not include "condiments," although we do keep a supply of salt, pepper and other seasonings and mustard and ketchup in a cupboard as a courtesy to guests who want an embellishment or would like to cook. If the reviewer intended "condiment" to include the non-condiments peanut butter and jam, sealed jars are available on request, although in eight years, no such request has been made by other guests, some of whom have traveled here for extended stays of seven to ten nights by private jet or have paid by American Express black card and stated that they were well pleased.

This group used all rooms at all times. The party came in several autos for which parking was provided. The women arrived with dirty laundry and immediately availed themselves of our free Maytag Neptune washer and dryer and laundry supplies. We cannot account for the odor reported. One bedroom abuts the owners' quarters. The other bedrooms on the third level are fifty to 75 feet distant, separated by thick walls and doors. Smoking is strictly forbidden indoors and does not occur to owners' knowledge.

The house was fully booked with whole house rentals both before and after this stay. We did not notice nor did the cleaning staff report an odor, as we ask that they do, and there were no other complaints. The third flight of stairs leads to a penthouse sitting area and rooftop gardens. The guests were not infirm and did not state a concern before reserving. Any sound from the elevated train that runs behind the building is quite muffled as the house is new construction with a double course of brick with six inches of dead air space in between and custom made triple glazed windows.

After the fuss about the bedding died down, no further complaint was noted and some pleasantries were even exchanged. We do not understand the reviewer's comment about not feeling "safe." We aim to please, but in order to please, we expect and count on an open and honest dialogue between guests and ourselves, including the number of people in the party.

“Outstanding B & B”

Old Town Bed and Breakfast

B & Bs are always our choice of accomodation when travelling so we feel qualified to rate this one as outstanding. First of all we agree with everything that was written in the first review posted. Secondly, this B & B is non-smoking.....not a trace and I am sensitive. The place is beautiful and immaculate with wonderful bedlinens. Our room had a glassed in double shower (no bathtub) with great pressure and lots of flufffy towels. We stayed 4 nights so got the room for $150.00 per night. It was very quiet. Located on a lovely tree lined street in Old Chicago (very much like Cabbagetown in Toronto). Houses are mostly renovated Victorian single dwelling homes. The "El", elevated subway, runs behind but is not attached as reported in a previous post. Besides your room and ensuite bath you have the use of living room, dining room, rooftop terrace, gourmet kitchen, exercise room and washer and dryer (Maytag Neptunes). These rooms are solely for the use of the guests. Fresh milk and tropicana OJ (not from comcentrate), bread, bagels, english muffins, good quality tea and coffee, yogurt, jams, and cold cereal are provided. It was great to be able to grab something quick and head out to tour Chicago and not have to sit down to a served breakfast. Sometimes we like to do that but not this trip. We were there to see Chicago.

“Old Town is 6 Stars”

Old Town Bed and Breakfast

Old Town Chicago Bed and Breakfast is everything its publicity promises and so much more! The decor and guest spaces are outstanding; well-done, memorable, expansive, and a terrific value. We've stayed here numerous times and always recommend it to our friends. The hosts are genuinely friendly and knowledgeable-- they ARE Chicago. The Art Deco and mid-century furnishings are fabulous. You can do your own cooking in the professional kitchen, and invite friends in. The location is so convenient to everywhere! The el is close, but the sound has never bothered us. We've stayed at b&b's all over the USA and overseas, and Old Town is one of the most outstanding. Highly recommend.

“Zero Stars”

Old Town Bed and Breakfast

The Old Town B&B states they are three stars....hardly. The proprietors smoke, not a very B&B activity. The building directly joins Chicago's famous "L"--elevated rail--and this is noisy! The rooms themselves allowed you to hear the neighboring guests activities--I was awoken on a Saturday at 6:30 AM. My room had no bath. The breakfast is ultra cheesey----generic English muffins, generic orange joice...you get the idea.

This is $50 B&B that demands $175. Rip-off!!!!

Mr. R. from California booked this reservation for a six night stay in late October 2004. The reviewer accompanied Mr. R. but did not participate in payment to us. We charged Mr. R. $125 per night (not $175 per night as the reviewer states) as the time was slow and the stay was long. Mr. R. was initially distressed that we did not have an exterior lock on the bedroom door (all doors now have exterior locks) and was concerned for his laptop. We offered to secure the laptop. That appeared to satisfy Mr. R. who did not express any other concerns or complaints for the remainder of his stay.

On the first day, the reviewer invited a local Chicago lady friend of his to meet him at our place. To our consternation, the lady friend, who was a stranger to us and did not stay here, forcefully complained to us that there was no bathtub in the bathroom and that the food offering (to which she was not entitled, as she was not a guest, but would have been welcome) was not to her liking, complaints repeated here by the reviewer.

As advertised, our midsize bedroom on the first level has a double sized shower with tub size footprint. It does not have a bathtub. Had a bathtub been critical to Mr. R., the paying guest who did not state a complaint about the bathroom facilities, he could have reserved our master bedroom or booked elsewhere. As advertised, our food offering is generous extended continental fare, help yourself, 24 hours a day. At the time, we did not serve English muffins but rather bread and bagels from a first rate local Jewish delicatessen. Hence, no "brand" name on the bag. However, by no means "generic."

As to sounds and noises, the building is new construction, a double course of brick with six inches of dead air space in between and custom made triple glazed windows. Any sound from the elevated train that runs near the property is quite muffled. These guests stayed on the first level where there is only one bedroom. It is quite impossible to hear "neighboring guest activities" in the first floor bedroom as all other bedrooms are on the third level. One day, we did need to perform some early morning maintenance work in the guest house and it's likely that that's what the guest heard. It is a rare occurrence. Smoking is forbidden in the house and permitted only outdoors. One of the proprietors did smoke at the time. The reviewer could only have known that because he saw her outside doing yard work. She has since stopped.
