We are a young couple on a budget and enjoyed staying at the Days Inn in Chicago because it was economical, clean, and close to a bus line (2-3 blocks) that took you anywhere in Chicago. Staff was extremely helpful when it came to explaining the bus routes, etc and the continental breakfast was very nice. Rooms were teeny tiny but comfortable and clean. The hotel itself was older, but had been renovated in a modern way. Parking is close - you can bypass valet and park yourself two blocks away. It is cheaper but you can't move the car in and out like you can with valet. The diversey park area seemed safe and had a college-town vibe. Lots of good places to eat nearby and hole-in-the-wall pubs - loved it!
