There must be someone left in the world who finds an overkill of faux renaissance/baroque touches in a North American hotel room charming. Not me or anyone I know, or maybe this place is just trying to compete with the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA. It's just gross: Everything from the rooms to the common areas is a living tribute to low class flea markets and thrift stores. The carpet and walls are splashed with stodgy old surface patterns reminiscent of 1980s nouveau riche bad taste. The views from three sides of the building are ugly or nonexistent. My room smells like a Crabtree and Evelyn store. When I went to open the entertainment center for some visual relief, I found an old analog tube set instead of the 27" HD flat screen advertised on the hotel's web page. $12.95 per day for internet access that I get for $30/month at home is not a "nominal fee," as advertised on their web page. Nor is a $7 bottle of evian. It's next to Millenium Park, which is great, but this hotel is still a long way from any business or entertainment centers. You wouldn't know it from the price tag -- $220/night for the most basic room. There are too many other good lodging options in Chicago to settle for a tasteless and overpriced room at the Hilton Chicago. Definitely eep shopping.

“We didn't know!”

I reserved a 2 bedroom suite in December for a June weekend. The website states it has one room with 2 doubles, and one room with a king, also includes a parlor. When I checked in, the clerk told me we had 1904 and 1905. When you get to the room, 1904/5 are listed on a plaque together, and have a seperate enterance at the end of the hall. You go in the double doors to a little foyer, the room enterance to 1904 is off to the right, and 1905 is straight ahead. 1904 was the 2 double bedded room, with 2 bathrooms. 1905 was a huge room with a wet bar, lovely views, a king size murphy bed, a sofa with a fold out bed, a loveseat, and assorted chairs. This room had one bathroom. We believed that this was the two doubles/one king/parlor, and this was sufficient for us, but we had another relative that decided to come in at the last minute, and I couldn't get another room unless i paid almost double for a single room than what I paid for the suite. So we reserved a room at the Swissotel, and she cabbed back and forth over the weekend. Upon checkout we examined the bill and there was a charge for food and beverage. Called down to see what it was, and was told it was for a bottle of water from room 1903. I said we don't have 1903, we have 1904/5. The person said you have the two bedroom suite, that encompasses 1903/1904/1905. The check in clerk never told us that, and we wouldn't have known, because the entrance to 1903 is outside the double door entrance to the suite. I had someone check, and sure enough, our card opened the door to 1903. We had shelled out over $250 and countless cab fares for another hotel room, and had an empty room with a king size bed sitting there all the time. I felt sick. They did check with housekeeping and verified that the room had not been touched. They took off the beverage charge and gave me a slight credit. I think they were unwilling to do more because I had such a good price on the room. The guy asked when I had made the reservation because he had never seen a price that low. Other than our unpleasant surprise at the end of our stay, we were very happy with the accomodations. There were a few gnats in one of the bathrooms, but not a big deal. My mom could sit at the window, and watch the boats on the lake. We are all women, so it was nice to have 3 bathrooms. The staff was all very nice, especially the waitress at breakfast at the Pavilion, and the Valet guy. I'd like to reserve that suite again, not hopeful about getting it at the same price though, because I have been checking for different dates, and have never seen it for less than twice what we paid. If we are lucky enough to stay there again, we will know what to expect!

“Hilton On South Michigan Should Be Better”

Had a week long stay at the Hilton on south Michigan while attending a meeting. The hotel has some elegance in the lobby, meeting rooms and lounges - the hotel rooms could definitely use updating. I would definitely say that for the price of a room here - the rooms should be top notch. My car was misplaced during valet parking, our reservations were messed up, hotel staff showed up repeatedly throughout the week at our door with items (room service, a new coffee pot, laundry) that wasn't ours.

I would not stay at this property again. There are much better places for the money in close proximity to Michigan Ave. It is a very big hotel and at times it felt like we were staying at Faulty Towers.

“Worst hotel ever”

Truly this must be the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Ever.

This is my stay:
drive to the valet parking, greeted with a smile and the bell boy comes along: "You do not need help with your bags, right?" Not the nicest of things to say, I believe.

The lobby staff (mainly bell boys) are just standing there, giggling to one another and making "smart" comments that you can hear perfectly well. They look more like teenagers with time to spare rather than staff member of what is supposed to be a landmark of Chicago.

All the staff seems to be bothered by whatever request you make and a simple question on the phone to Guest Services "What time does the Breakfast service stop at the restaurant" gets you this reply: "I am not sure but it must be some time around 10.30". You have to ask them to confirm and then they do.

This last example should illustrate perfectly well my stay: it is 4:30 AM and I am in the lift ready to come down to reception. I am carring two suitcases and a laptop roller case (3 items in total). When the doors are closing a bell boy gets in the lift "Did you have a nice stay Sir?" I Say, "Actually No, it has been rather dissapointing". He replies "We will have to do better next time".
We arrive at the lobby level and I drag my 3 pieces of lugage to the hall (so far he has not volunteered any help). I keep draging my luggage around the carpeted lobby floor (lugage does not slide on carpet, you so have to pull!) and he (the bell boy) manages to stay 3 steps behind me the whole walk to reception (it is about 40 yards from the lift). He has managed to NOT HELP at all and as soon as he makes it to the Front Desk he sneeks back into the back office.
So much for service (specially after I had told him my stay had not been a pleasant one).

This is the service you get at the Hilton Chicago.

The first impression is the beautiful lobby and cafe. The work-out center and pool were the best in any hotel I've seen. Service was excellent from all staff. We booked through Priceline - what a pleasant surprise!

It's across the street from Grant Park & the Art Institute.
