I was at the Marriott for a meeting of my professional society. Overall, I liked it. The room was clean and well-equipped but a bit small. There are plenty of grocery stores and restaurants within easy walkting distance so you're not stuck with paying hotel food and restaurant prices.
Business services were decent with one “miss”. I was moderating 2 panels, so I really appreciated the fact that they had A/V people walking in before sessions and asking if everything was OK- technical issues with the equipment could be resolved quickly and easily. They also had a single in-house number to call for support if you needed them at other times. The “miss”- one of my panelists was stuck in traffic and called the hotel trying to reach me. They told him I wasn’t registered there. I’d been there for 4 days at that point. We also found the elevators very slow when sessions finished up; sometimes we waited forever and then 3 showed up on the same floor at once.
The high-speed Internet was consistently reliable, which I can’t always say for many hotels I’ve used. You have to sign on daily unless you get the “wired for business” package ($9.95/day) when you check in. Oddly, every time I signed in it gave me a choice of a $14.95 rate or a $9.95 rate and I always chose the $9.95 one even though I hadn’t bought “wired for business” and $9.95 is what I was charged. Note there’s a 15% “Internet tax” on top of that. Nasty.
The hotel offers shuttle services to and from Midway and O’Hare every 15 minutes. It’s cheaper than a cab- for the 2 of us it was $38 one way. An alternative is the subway/train system (Grand is the nearest stop) from the airport for $2 but it involves a change of train, which is even worse if you have bags. Two warnings about the shuttle bus: first, we were waiting in the lobby and one came and went without anyone announcing it. So keep an eye out the door. Fortunately, we weren’t in a hurry and got the next one. It’s also “first-come, first-serve” and they don’t take reservations. Ours stopped at a second hotel and couldn’t pick up all the people who were waiting for it due to lack of space. We were skeptical about the one-hour estimate for transit time to the airport when we got into a traffic jam (this was a noon departure from the hotel) but it was almost exactly an hour door to door. You can get tickets for the shuttle at the Concierge desk and they can add it to your room charges.
The pool was decent- a nice length but narrow enough that when there were 3 of us swimming laps we had to duck out of each others’ ways as we passed. The Fitness Center had enough equipment that I noted treadmills available at 7 AM.
Overall, I liked this hotel and would return if the price is right.
