We stayed at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza on Nov. 16-18. It was just a weekend get-a-way. The hotel is situated in the top ½ of the Chicago Sun Times Building so you may miss it. We had to wait for a bellman to come get our luggage. There was only 1 guy on duty it seemed, but he was doing a great job. We did see other bellmen in the hotel lobby just standing around so I’m not sure why there was only 1 bellman assisting guests when we arrived. The hotel lobby is on the 15th floor as others have stated. We had valet parking but the attendants weren’t always available so I suggest self parking which is $10 cheaper. The hotel is pretty dated so but be deceived by the pix.
We booked thru Priceline. We asked for a non-smoking king with a lake-view. They were most unaccommodating. We received a non-smoking double room which faced the inner court with a view of the swimming pool and other guests’ rooms. From my experience it seems that hotels are less accommodating for people who book reservations through online discounted sources. The rooms were nice, nothing special at all. Walls are a little thin but we didn’t experience any extreme noise throughout our stay. The water pressure in the shower was very low. They have free wireless internet which worked great.
The hotel is a decent walking distance from the main downtown area (MI Ave) but the weather wasn’t extremely cold. I would recommend driving or taking a cab to get around when temps are less than 40 degrees. There’s also not too much activity in that area. We happened to experience the Christmas lighting of MI Ave. There was a parade also. It was really exciting!! There’re plenty of restaurants and shopping and other things to do in Chicago. If you’re in Chicago, please stop by Garrett’s on MI Ave. Their popcorn is deee-licious but you will have to wait in line so be prepared (it is WORTH it)!
If you’re looking for a great dining experience, check out the Melting Pot. But plan to be there for 3+ hours; the service is not slow – it’s just a FULL dining experience. Everything is cooked directly on your table. It was the best lunch/dinner experience I’ve had. The chocolate fondue for dessert was the best!!
