We stayed at the Holiday Inn Mart Plaza on Nov. 16-18. It was just a weekend get-a-way. The hotel is situated in the top ½ of the Chicago Sun Times Building so you may miss it. We had to wait for a bellman to come get our luggage. There was only 1 guy on duty it seemed, but he was doing a great job. We did see other bellmen in the hotel lobby just standing around so I’m not sure why there was only 1 bellman assisting guests when we arrived. The hotel lobby is on the 15th floor as others have stated. We had valet parking but the attendants weren’t always available so I suggest self parking which is $10 cheaper. The hotel is pretty dated so but be deceived by the pix.

We booked thru Priceline. We asked for a non-smoking king with a lake-view. They were most unaccommodating. We received a non-smoking double room which faced the inner court with a view of the swimming pool and other guests’ rooms. From my experience it seems that hotels are less accommodating for people who book reservations through online discounted sources. The rooms were nice, nothing special at all. Walls are a little thin but we didn’t experience any extreme noise throughout our stay. The water pressure in the shower was very low. They have free wireless internet which worked great.

The hotel is a decent walking distance from the main downtown area (MI Ave) but the weather wasn’t extremely cold. I would recommend driving or taking a cab to get around when temps are less than 40 degrees. There’s also not too much activity in that area. We happened to experience the Christmas lighting of MI Ave. There was a parade also. It was really exciting!! There’re plenty of restaurants and shopping and other things to do in Chicago. If you’re in Chicago, please stop by Garrett’s on MI Ave. Their popcorn is deee-licious but you will have to wait in line so be prepared (it is WORTH it)!

If you’re looking for a great dining experience, check out the Melting Pot. But plan to be there for 3+ hours; the service is not slow – it’s just a FULL dining experience. Everything is cooked directly on your table. It was the best lunch/dinner experience I’ve had. The chocolate fondue for dessert was the best!!

“Average... Next door to Mechandise Mart”

Its a good walk from the nearest CTA stop, which is down in The Loop.

Not bad if you consider the price and you do not mind walking to places such as Michigan Avenue.

I would stay here again, but I have no need to stay by the Merchandise Mart and I would prefer to be closer to Michigan Avenue. It's an average hotel.

“Bland and Sad”

Stayed here for one night in a sad looking room, with no view. The place was clean but could use a major over haul. Having a meal in the atrium is like eating in an airport. The pool is good however as is the fitness center. The staff were friendly. The location is withing walking distance of the main attractions, but it feels to be a little bit cut off from the energy of a city center hotel. There is a good grocery story in the lobby which serves great sandwitches

“Adequate choice for Chicago”

The Holiday Inn Chicago (Merchandise Mart) is correctly described as adequate. Stayed here for two nights as part of a quick trip to Chicago. Picked the hotel for the price above all but in some ways I guess you get what you pay for.

Location: The hotels location isn't horrible; it’s just not that convenient. You’re close to River North and the Loop but not too much nightlife or shopping. It gets frustrating after the first couple days of navigating several elevators, flights of stairs, escalators and hallways just to get to a cab or train station. The hotel is good choice if you want to save some cash and don't mind walking a couple extra blocks to reach some sites.

Rooms/Hotel: Clean just very plain and somewhat dated. Beds were OK and there was also the pillow menu which is standard at most Holiday Inn's now. Bathrooms were basic the lighting was too strong. Free Wi-Fi in all guest rooms.

Restaurant: Didn't eat at the hotel because we thought it was way too over-priced. (Tip - Inside the merchandise mart is a food court that serves breakfast very quickly and cheaply). Check out Blueprint in the Merchandise Mart for close cocktails.

“worst service ever”

This hotel has the worst service ever. My company booked 28 rooms at this hotel, When we tried to cancel three nights in two of the rooms they charged us a $400 cancelation fee, even though we gave them 2 months notice. I tried to explain to them that I will cancel all 28 rooms if they charge us this fee, yet they don't understand that they will lose all this money, plus the extras like our dinners in the restaurant, parking, etc. They still made us pay the cancellation charge. Apparently they don't quite understand customer service, and how it can cost a lot of money.
