The Silversmith is very promising -- good location, nice big rooms, right price. A few issues make it a bit less than ideal, however.

The good: we had a gigantic room with a king bed and pull-out sofa, along with a huge bathroom with separate shower and jacuzzi tub. The price was right at $90/night from Priceline.

The bad: The hotel is right next to the El, so it is a little noisy, even on the other side of the building. Of course, this is also rather convenient if you want to take the metro. The staff was fine, though at times they seemed patronizing (talked very slowly, described everything they were doing -- it was odd, though perhaps a Chicago thing?). Worst aspect of the hotel was the "business center" -- a pair of seriously underpowered PCs and a low-ink inkjet printer that probably came free in a bundle. Trying to print a boarding pass for the flight home was an exercise in patience at best.

Overall a fine stay for the price, but nothing particularly great.

I booked this Hotel through Priceline for 80 dollars plus tax. Price was good when I booked it. Then afterwords, I started receiving promotions for 4 star Hotels for 100 dollars.
Pros: My conclusion is for the money 80, is good. Clean, good bed, good towels, good and large bathroom. I 've got a room in the back, no L noise. Service is excellent, check in and check out ( they gave us a late check-out ).
Cons: Although location is good, the Hotel is "under the L rails" which appears sad, odd and scary.
Lobby is old, very old, big and dated. However, if you do not mind about it, it's fine.
If you go during a weekend, I would recommend a more northern ( Michigan North) location....

Overall, I was pretty happy with the room, the location and the price. No complaints or anything. I enjoyed my stay here and would return to the hotel. It's not super fancy but you need to ask yourself what you're looking for..

The hotel is located near the base of the L train and my first impression was that the area seemed a bit dodgey (and that was during the day) but the Hilton (Palmer House) is only a block away. Having walked around though the area a few times it seems totally fine. Also, the L train is right above the hotel and it's pretty noisy (I could hear it inside at the reception desk)

The room is pretty large but rather dark (I was facing inward to a closed off area in the hotel complex. But if my option was facing the street and listening to the train, I'd prefer the inward view (and you could hear the train from this room but very faintly). The bathroom is large, the internet is free but they have an older tube tv. The fitness room comprises of two treadmills, a step climber, an elyptical machine, a bench and a small universal type machine.

This is located a few doors down from the E. Madison subway entrance. I took a shuttle bus to the hotel and given the ride (over an hour and a half) I would recommend taking the subway/train. The hotel is also near the "bean" and the Art Institute of Chicago. Everything seems pretty walkable (Wacker street is probably a 15 minute walk away). You're within walking distance of deep dish pizza (Pizzano, Giordano's) and a bit farther out but walkable blues music (Blue Chicago).

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at The Silversmith. I am not from Chicago but knowing friends who are, they informed me that I was definitely going to be in a great location being one block away from Millennium Park and Michigan Ave. Once I arrived, the bellmen were very prompt and had my luggage handled before I knew it. One of the things I thought to be unique of the hotel is that the main lobby is elevated to the second floor. It was a very nice presentation once the elevator doors opened. The lobby was spacious with a nice atmosphere and the front desk was happy to greet me. I had a reservation for a suite, and it was absolutely gorgeous! There were very nice surprise personal touches in the suite including a variety platter. The suite was very large which was unexpected, and despite the L train I noticed right in front, it was very quiet and I slept very well. Their staff was helpful and friendly in addressing any additional needs I had. I highly recommend The Silversmith, as I will continue to come back and stay in the future.

I stayed here with family while visiting Chicago. The rooms are clean, the bathrooms are of a decent size, and the people were wonderful. However, the doorman, Vincent, was the real treat! He greeted us, escorted us with our luggage to our room, and recommended some great places to eat (none of which included the restaurant next to the hotel.) On the way back to the airport, we decided to take the el, which drops off right in front of the hotel. He packed our bags (50 lbs each) to the platform for us!

This hotel is clean, and nice. The lobby is a great place to hide out if you want to get out of your room and read. Be aware that if you're looking to spend a great amount of time in your room, there isn't much of a view - it's surrounded by buildings and the el runs right in front. Don't be too afraid of the el, though - from the rooms we were in, you couldn't hear it unless it was really quiet, and then it sounded kind of like the ocean.

The location is great - it's surrounded by everything within walking distance. However, I would avoid two things: 1) The restaurant downstairs - it's pricey and not very good, and 2) Room service - it comes from the same restaurant. There's a corner bakery a 1/2 block south which does a great breakfast and lunch, or a diner called B&B's that's on the west side of the next block south that is much better and has a great breakfast special.

In all, it's a pleasant place, and great if you're on vacation or planning to do other things besides sit in your room.
