Wicker Park is the former meca of the Chicago art community and location of the bi-annual "Around the Coyote" art festival. The area has experienced massive economic growth over the past few years and is now home to a variety of boutique shops, restaurants and trendy nightclubs.
Wicker Park has a thriving night-life and the streets are extremely lively on weekend evenings. Although rent is no longer affordable for starving artists, local community groups fight to maintain the neighborhood's subtle bohemian vibe. Meanwhile developers are eager to exploit its popularity and turn the area into another generic, homogenous neighborhood.
Many artists and musicians have moved just beyond the area to Logan Square and Humbolt Park or south to Pilsen where rents are lower. However those areas have yet to fully take the place of Wicker Park as the artistic hub of the city.
Wicker Park is a great neighborhood for walking, shopping and eating. It can be reached via the Damon stop of the CTA Blue Line or by Taxi. Parking is limited, especially on the weekends.
